Increased reports of pertussis (whooping cough) have occurred throughout our community.
Pertussis can be a serious illness but may begin like a common cold.
Pertussis often starts with a runny nose, sneezing, and mild cough.
After 1 or 2 weeks, the cough worsens and can occur in sudden, uncontrollable bursts. These coughing attacks can end in vomiting and/or in a high-pitched whooping noise. The cough can continue for up to 3 months.
Pertussis can be less severe in adults and older children and when not recognized and treated, can be easily passed on to infants, who may become very ill.
Persons with pertussis should not go to school, work, or any activities until they have finished 5 days of antibiotic treatment, unless the person has already been coughing for 3 or more weeks. Although the cough can last a long time, a person is no longer contagious after the third week.
If you or a family member has a cough lasting seven days or more, especially if you've been in contact with someone diagnosed with pertussis, please consult your health care provider.
Most children have been vaccinated for pertussis, but protection can decrease over time. People who have completed some or all the recommended vaccinations for pertussis may still get pertussis disease but will generally have a milder illness.
A pertussis vaccine for adults and adolescents is available. Pertussis protection is combined with tetanus and diphtheria protection in both the DTaP and Tdap vaccine. Because protection from pertussis immunization can decrease over time, it is important for adults to receive a Tdap booster every 10 years.
Now is a good time to make sure you are up to date on your pertussis vaccines. Contact your Primary Care Provider or the MN Department of Health website on how to access vaccine records:

The National Weather Service is predicting our first round of wintry weather to hit the region tomorrow on Halloween. It looks like we're in for a sloppy day for school and for those who partake in Halloween festivities. Please exercise caution throughout the day. The combination of increased children moving through neighborhoods, slippery roads and lower visibility make for more dangerous conditions for our kids.
Winter weather will be on its way in the near future and we want to inform you of important winter weather information. First, if school related closures are needed, families are notified through our messaging system. It’s important to have your contact information up to date in Parent Portal to receive these messages. You can also find closure information on the district webpage and on TV through local news stations. If you need to update your information, please log in through Parent Portal to make the corrections. If you need assistance logging in to Parent Portal, please contact Haley Kachinske at the district office by completing the Parent Portal Activation Form on our website.
Each year our district works with Cloquet Transit to provide a winter bus route option for students who are traditionally within walking distance. This option runs through most of the winter season and ends in early spring. The first step in this process is identifying the most appropriate bus stop locations for interested students. If you are currently within walking boundaries and would like to have your student(s) access the winter route, please call Cloquet Transit at 879-1291 and let them know you are interested. The deadline for notifying Cloquet Transit is November 15th. We hope to begin the routes on November 25th. Cloquet Transit will notify you of the pick up and drop off locations and times once they are established.
If your child is already on a bus route, you do not need to do anything. Your child’s route will remain the same unless notified by Cloquet Transit.

Due to flooding, the FDL Cloquet Center will be closed today, May 31st. There will be no bussing today.
